Van Tellingen ShakersWooden Collection Various Shakers Home I have a number of shakers created by the children's illustrator, Ruth Van Tellingen Bendel. They were made at Regal China in Antioch Illinois. She began making huggables in the 1940s. Any that are labeled "Van Telligen" or "Patent Pending" are dated between 1949 and 1958. Any shakers marked "Bendel" were created from 1959-1963. In 1963, there was a fire at the plant. All of the molds were destroyed and no further Van Tellingen huggables were made. Some of the more rare shakers that I don't yet have are: The Mermaid and Sailor huggables, the Lovebugs, Peek-a-Boo huggers, and the Piggies!

The hugging ducks were the first pair that I aquired. They are marked "Van Tellingen" and still have their cork plugs. The ducks are valued at $30-35 (Davern, 26) |
The next two that I added to my collection were hugging bunnies and bears.

I also have the Boy and Dog shakers. There are three versions of these. The boy either comes light skinned, medium, or dark skinned. I have the medium skinned version. It is worth about $45-50 (Davern, 26). This is the most rare huggable I have, though I aspire to collect even more rare huggables at some point. These are also marked "Pat. Pend." and do not have their cork stoppers. |
